FAQs

1. Can Backups Beyond the Retention Period Still Be Downloaded or Restored?

Backup sets will be automatically deleted upon expiration and cannot be downloaded or restored.
It is recommended that you reasonably configure the backup retention period based on your requirements or download backup files to your local device via the SQL Server console.
You can also manually back up instance data via the console.
Note:
Manual backups also occupy backup space. Please use the backup space reasonably to avoid incurring additional costs.

2. Backups Can Be Deleted Manually

Automatic backups cannot be manually deleted. You can set the backup retention period, and they will be automatically deleted upon expiration. If you enable the cross-region backup feature, cross-region backup files can also set the cross-region backup retention period, and they will be automatically deleted upon expiration.
Manual backups can be manually deleted in the backup list of the SQL Server console. Unless manually deleted, their retention duration is determined by the retention period policy selected during manual backup.

3. Can Data and Log Backup Be Disabled?

Cannot be disabled. However, you can reduce the backup frequency and delete unused manual backup data via the SQL Server console to decrease backup space usage.

4. How to Reduce Backup Space Overhead?

You can delete unused manual backup data (manual backups can be deleted on the Backup Management page under the Instance Management page of the SQL Server console).
Reduce the frequency of automatic backups for non-core businesses (you can adjust the backup cycle and retention period in the console, with backups performed at least twice a week).
Note:
Point-in-time restore feature relies on data backups + log backups within the backup cycle and retention period. Shortening the automatic backup frequency and retention period will affect the available time range for instance data restoration. Please balance your backup configuration accordingly.
You can shorten the retention period for data backups and log backups of non-core businesses (a backup retention period of 7 days is sufficient for most scenarios).
Workload Scenario
Backup Retention Period
Core businesses
Recommended 7 days - 7300 days.
Non-core and non-data businesses
Recommended 7 days.
Archiving businesses
Set the data backup retention period to 7 days. Manually back up data based on actual business needs and delete them promptly after use.
Testing businesses
Set the data backup retention period to 7 days. Manually back up data based on actual business needs and delete them promptly after use.

5. Can Isolated Instances Still Download Backups?

Yes.
Yearly/monthly subscription instances: Starting from the 8th day after instance expiration (that is, 7 days after expiration), the instance will be isolated and moved to the recycle bin. At this point, rollback and manual backups are prohibited, while automatic backups continue. You can download backups by going to the instance's Operation column > More. Backup data exceeding the free tier will still incur charges until the instance is terminated.
Pay-as-you-go instances: After 24 hours of instance expiration, the instance will be isolated and moved to the recycle bin. At this point, rollback and manual backups are prohibited, while automatic backups continue. You can download backups by going to the instance's Operation column > More. Backup data exceeding the free tier will still incur charges until the instance is terminated.
