What is RTP?

RTP stands for Real-time Transport Protocol. It is a network protocol designed for delivering audio and video over IP networks in real-time. RTP is used in applications such as video conferencing, streaming media, and online gaming to ensure that data is delivered promptly and in the correct order.

Key features of RTP include:

  • Timestamping: Allows the receiver to reconstruct the original timing of the data.
  • Sequence numbering: Ensures that packets are reassembled in the correct order, even if they arrive out of order.
  • Payload type identification: Indicates the format of the data being carried.

Example: In a video conferencing scenario, RTP is used to transmit the audio and video streams between participants in real-time. Each participant's device sends audio and video data encapsulated in RTP packets, which are then transmitted over the internet to the other participants.

For cloud-based solutions, Tencent Cloud offers services like Tencent Real-Time Communication (TRTC), which leverages RTP and other protocols to provide low-latency, high-quality real-time communication capabilities for applications such as video calls, live streaming, and interactive gaming.
