How does Tails backup and restore data?

Tails is an operating system that focuses on privacy and security. It uses a feature called "Persistent Storage" to backup and restore data. Persistent Storage allows users to save files and settings across sessions. When a user enables Persistent Storage, a partition on the USB drive is encrypted and used to store data that persists between sessions.

Backup:

  • Files and directories can be manually copied to the Persistent Storage partition.
  • Settings and configurations are automatically saved.

Restore:

  • Upon starting Tails with the same USB drive, the system recognizes the Persistent Storage partition and loads the saved files and settings.
  • Users can access their previously saved data as if they were working in a regular session.

Example:
If a user creates a document in Tails and saves it to the Persistent Storage, the next time they boot Tails from the same USB drive, they will find the document still there, along with any other saved files and settings.

For cloud-based backup solutions that offer similar functionality but with more scalability and accessibility, consider services like Tencent Cloud's Object Storage (COS). COS allows users to store and retrieve any amount of data at any time from anywhere on the web, providing a robust solution for backup and restore needs.
