How does memory mapping work?

Memory mapping is a technique used in computing to map files or devices into memory, allowing for efficient and convenient access to their contents. It enables a file or a portion of a file to be treated as an array of bytes in memory, enabling direct manipulation of the file's contents without the need for explicit read and write operations.

Here's how memory mapping works:

  1. File Mapping: A file on disk is mapped into virtual memory space. This mapping is done by the operating system.
  2. Virtual Memory: The operating system creates a virtual memory region that corresponds to the file's size. This region is divided into pages.
  3. Page Tables: The operating system maintains page tables that keep track of which parts of the file are currently mapped into memory and where they are located.
  4. Accessing Data: When a program accesses memory locations within the mapped region, the operating system handles the translation from virtual memory addresses to physical memory addresses. If the requested data is not in physical memory, a page fault occurs, and the operating system loads the necessary data from disk into memory.
  5. Modifying Data: Any changes made to the memory-mapped file are automatically reflected in the file on disk, ensuring consistency.

Example: Consider a text editor that uses memory mapping to edit a large file. When the editor opens the file, it maps the file into memory. The user can then edit the text directly as if it were in a buffer in memory. Changes are immediately written back to the file on disk, and the editor can efficiently handle large files without loading the entire file into memory at once.
