What is the SMS format?

The SMS (Short Message Service) format refers to the standardized structure of text messages sent between mobile devices. An SMS message typically consists of the following components:

  1. Originating Address: The phone number or shortcode that sends the message.
  2. Destination Address: The recipient's phone number.
  3. Message Content: The actual text, limited to 160 characters in GSM 7-bit encoding (or fewer if using Unicode).
  4. Protocol Identifier (PID): Specifies the message type (e.g., standard SMS, WAP push).
  5. Data Coding Scheme (DCS): Defines the character encoding (e.g., GSM 7-bit, UCS2 for Unicode).
  6. Timestamp: The time the message was sent.

Example of an SMS Format:

  • Originating Address: +1234567890
  • Destination Address: +0987654321
  • Message Content: "Hello, this is a test SMS!"
  • PID: 0 (standard SMS)
  • DCS: 0 (GSM 7-bit encoding)
  • Timestamp: 2023-10-01 12:00:00

In cloud-based SMS services, platforms like Tencent Cloud SMS provide APIs to send and manage SMS messages programmatically. For example, businesses can use Tencent Cloud SMS to send verification codes, notifications, or marketing messages with high reliability and global reach.
