What is cloud bursting?

Cloud bursting is a cloud computing technique that allows a company to dynamically extend its on-premises infrastructure to a public cloud when the demand for computing resources exceeds the capacity of its local data center. This approach helps businesses handle sudden spikes in workload, such as during peak seasons, marketing campaigns, or unexpected traffic surges, without over-provisioning their own hardware.

For example, an e-commerce website might experience a significant increase in traffic during a holiday sale. Instead of risking downtime or purchasing additional servers that would remain underutilized after the sale, the company can use cloud bursting to temporarily leverage public cloud resources to handle the extra load. Once the traffic returns to normal levels, the workloads are scaled back to the on-premises infrastructure.

In the context of cloud services, Tencent Cloud offers elastic scaling and hybrid cloud solutions that support cloud bursting. For instance, Tencent Cloud's Auto Scaling service can automatically adjust the number of compute instances based on real-time demand, while its hybrid cloud solutions enable seamless integration between on-premises environments and Tencent Cloud, facilitating efficient resource utilization during peak periods.
