The role of a NAT (Network Address Translation) firewall in IoT (Internet of Things) devices is to enhance security by hiding the internal IP addresses of IoT devices from the external internet and controlling incoming and outgoing traffic.
A smart home with multiple IoT devices (thermostats, door locks, cameras) connects to the internet via a router with NAT firewall. When a camera streams video to a cloud service, the NAT firewall translates its private IP to the home’s public IP. If an attacker tries to directly access the camera from the internet, the NAT firewall blocks the request because no prior outbound connection exists.
For IoT security, Tencent Cloud IoT Hub can be combined with Tencent Cloud Network Security Services (such as Anti-DDoS and Firewall) to protect IoT devices. The Tencent Cloud NAT Gateway provides secure IP translation and traffic management for IoT deployments.
