OpenClaw Server Backup Strategies and Data Recovery

Deploying OpenClaw is the easy part. Keeping it running — and recoverable when things go sideways — is where operational maturity shows. Disk corruption, accidental rm -rf, botched upgrades, or cloud provider hiccups can all take your AI agent offline. The question isn't if you'll need a backup, it's when.

This article covers a layered backup strategy for OpenClaw deployments, from quick snapshots to granular data-level backups, plus tested recovery procedures.


What Needs to Be Backed Up

An OpenClaw deployment consists of several distinct data categories, each with different backup requirements:

Missing any one of these during a restore means a partial recovery at best. Your backup strategy needs to cover all of them.


Strategy 1: Instance-Level Snapshots

The fastest and most comprehensive backup method for cloud deployments. Tencent Cloud Lighthouse supports automated snapshots that capture the entire disk state — OS, application, data, everything.

Setting up automated snapshots on Lighthouse:

  1. Log into the Tencent Cloud console
  2. Navigate to your Lighthouse instance
  3. Go to Snapshot > Create Scheduled Snapshot Policy
  4. Set frequency (daily recommended) and retention (keep at least 7 days)

Snapshots are incremental — only changed blocks are stored after the first full snapshot. This keeps storage costs low while providing point-in-time recovery for the entire server.

When to use snapshots:

  • Before any major upgrade or configuration change
  • As a nightly automated backup
  • Before installing new skills (skill installations can modify system behavior; see the skills guide for details)

Limitation: Snapshots are all-or-nothing. You can't restore a single file from a snapshot without spinning up a new instance from it.


Strategy 2: Application-Level Backups

For granular recovery, back up OpenClaw's data separately:

Database-Specific Backups

If OpenClaw uses SQLite (default for lightweight deployments):

Strategy 3: Off-Server Backup Replication

A backup on the same server as your data is not a real backup. If the disk fails, you lose both. Replicate to external storage:

The 3-2-1 rule applies: 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy off-site.


Recovery Procedures

Full Recovery from Snapshot

The fastest path back to operational:

  1. Go to the Tencent Cloud Lighthouse console
  2. Create a new instance from your most recent snapshot
  3. Verify OpenClaw starts correctly
  4. Update DNS or IP references
  5. Test all channel integrations (Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp)

Recovery time: ~5 minutes for a standard Lighthouse instance.

Partial Recovery from Application Backup

When you need to restore specific components without rebuilding the entire server:

Recovery Testing (Critical)

An untested backup is not a backup. Schedule monthly recovery drills:

  1. Provision a temporary Lighthouse instance (the Special Offer makes this cost-effective)
  2. Restore from your latest backup
  3. Verify OpenClaw functionality — skills load correctly, conversations work, API responds
  4. Document any issues and fix the backup process
  5. Tear down the test instance

Backup Monitoring

Don't assume your cron job is running. Add verification:
