OpenClaw Advanced Application Development Collection: Microservice Architecture

When your OpenClaw deployment grows beyond a single agent handling a handful of skills, you hit an architectural inflection point. The monolithic approach — one instance, all skills loaded, all channels connected — starts showing cracks: slow restarts, skill conflicts, scaling bottlenecks, and deployment risk.

The solution is the same one that transformed web application development a decade ago: microservice architecture. And OpenClaw's skill-based design is naturally suited for it.

When to Go Microservice

Not every OpenClaw deployment needs microservices. If you're running a personal assistant with 5-10 skills on a single server, the monolithic approach is perfectly fine. Don't over-engineer.

But consider microservices when:

  • Multiple teams develop and deploy skills independently
  • Different skills have different scaling requirements (your customer service skill handles 10x the traffic of your reporting skill)
  • Uptime requirements vary (trading skills need 99.99%; internal tools can tolerate more downtime)
  • Skills have conflicting dependencies (different Python versions, library conflicts)
  • You need zero-downtime deployments (updating one skill shouldn't restart the entire system)

Architecture Overview

In a microservice OpenClaw architecture, each major skill or skill group runs as an independent service:

Each instance runs on its own Tencent Cloud Lighthouse server, with resources sized to its specific workload. Provision instances through the Tencent Cloud Lighthouse Special Offer.

Key Design Patterns

1. Service Discovery and Routing

The API Gateway routes incoming requests to the correct OpenClaw instance based on intent or channel:

  • Customer inquiries from WhatsApp → Instance A
  • Trading signals → Instance B
  • Content generation requests → Instance C

For simple setups, nginx reverse proxy with path-based routing works well. For more complex scenarios, consider a service mesh.

2. Shared State Management

Microservices need to share some state — user profiles, conversation history, configuration. Options:

  • Redis: Fast, in-memory shared state for session data and caching
  • PostgreSQL: Persistent storage for user data, conversation logs, and analytics
  • Message queue (RabbitMQ/Redis Streams): Async communication between services

3. Event-Driven Communication

Instead of services calling each other directly (tight coupling), use events:

Instance A (Customer Service) publishes:
  → "order_inquiry_received" event

Instance B (Order Management) subscribes:
  → Processes the inquiry
  → Publishes "order_status_retrieved" event

Instance A receives the event:
  → Formats and sends the response to the customer

This decoupling means services can be updated, restarted, or replaced independently.

4. Independent Deployment

Each instance has its own deployment pipeline:

Implementation Guide

Step 1: Identify Service Boundaries

Group your skills by domain and scaling requirements:

Step 2: Provision Infrastructure

Each service gets its own Lighthouse instance, sized appropriately:

  • Customer Service: 4 vCPU / 8GB (high concurrency)
  • Trading: 4 vCPU / 8GB (compute-intensive)
  • Content: 2 vCPU / 4GB (batch workloads)
  • Internal Tools: 2 vCPU / 2GB (low traffic)

Step 3: Set Up Communication Layer

Install Redis or RabbitMQ on a shared instance (or use a managed service). Configure each OpenClaw instance to publish and subscribe to relevant event channels.

Step 4: Configure the API Gateway

Set up nginx or a similar reverse proxy to route traffic:

Step 5: Install Skills Per Service

Each instance only loads the skills it needs. Follow the Skills guide for installation.

Step 6: Connect Channels

Route channels to the appropriate service:

  • WhatsApp → Customer Service instance
  • Telegram → Can route to multiple instances based on command prefix
  • Discord → Internal Tools instance

Monitoring and Observability

With multiple instances, monitoring becomes critical:

  • Health checks: Each instance exposes a /health endpoint; the gateway monitors them
  • Centralized logging: Aggregate logs from all instances into a single dashboard
  • Metrics: Track response times, error rates, and resource utilization per service
  • Alerting: Automated alerts when any service degrades

Trade-offs

Microservice architecture adds operational complexity. Be honest about the trade-offs:

For most teams, the sweet spot is 2-3 services, not 10. Start with a clear separation (e.g., customer-facing vs. internal), prove the pattern works, then split further if needed.
